Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who celebrate! And even if you don’t, it never hurts to stop and think about all you have to be thankful for.
Thanksgiving in my house has always been a big shebang. Most of the holidays we just celebrate with ourselves except for Thanksgiving and New Year’s, in which we always have a ton of people over. Most of my dad’s side of the family lives in Pennsylvania, so we aren’t able to see them, but everyone on my mom’s side heads over to our house. This year we had I think twenty-five people over. It was chaotic, but it was great to see everyone.
My friend Joyce, who is part Vietnamese and part Chinese, even came over. Her family has never celebrated Thanksgiving, which makes sense since it really isn’t their culture, per se. But after living in America for eleven plus years, I think you should take part in it. She was so excited for all the food. It was really fun and she got to meet my crazy family, haha.
Before we eat, we always go around the table and name one thing we are thankful for. This has always been such a hard task for me because I have soo much to be thankful for that I feel ungrateful for just saying one. I always say friends and family, because I think they are the most important to me. I have so many materialistic things to be thankful for, too. Just things I don’t even think about because everyone has it around me, like clothes and a cellphone, etc. But there are always people that don’t have the little things. I thought I would list a few things that I am most thankful for:
- My family. These people are the backbone of who I am. I wouldn’t be the person I am without them, and I wouldn’t be able to get through half of my struggles without them either. I’m so thankful that, besides the occasional fights and upsets, my family is generally pretty close and that I have two parents that are still happily married. That is rare enough in the world that we live in. My parents are also people I can look up to; they know when to be my parent, but they are also there to be my friend at times to.
- My friends. Friends change throughout the years, but I’ve always had a few really close friends. This year, my little circle has grown even closer yet, and the circle may not be huge, I couldn’t care less. Quality over quantity. They’re always there for me and they share the same values as me. Again, I wouldn’t be able to make it through half of my issues and problems without them. I love them for being them, and they love me for being me; quirks and all.
- My country. America is far from perfect and I think that that fact has become ever-clearer in these last couple of years with the numerous problems that are surfacing, but I’m still thankful. Americans enjoy so many freedoms: to say what we want, write what we want, worship what we want. That’s a lot more than many countries in this world who can’t exercise those freedoms. I’m ever thankful.
- Andrew. I really don’t need to go into to much detail I don’t think because it’s rather self-explanatory. The year and a half and some odd months that we’ve been together have been great, and he’s always treated me right. And always buys me Taco Bell.
Tomorrow is Black Friday (for those that don’t know what that is: all the stores open really early and have ridiculous sales) and it’s kind of tradition to participate in that too. We’re not those crazy people that get up at like 3 AM but rather around noon because we’re all so stuffed with food. This year some stores are opening on Thanksgiving night, which I think is so stupid. Thanksgiving is a holiday to be thankful and spend time with those you love and I feel like even that is being corrupted by going out and buying stuff for yourself/others. There’s been a lot of backlash about it, so I’m hoping not a lot of people will go and will focus on what it’s truly about. But, to each their own I suppose.
What are you thankful for?
Well, thank you! ^^ I’m actually not that new to blogging, my current site is just a reincarnation of a past one that died. I’ve never used WordPress. It’s too intimidating, lol.
Most of the time I don’t even have a pencil in my purse, lol, but for some reason every time I leave the house, I put a couple of quarters in my pocket. It’s just an odd habit that I don’t remember why I have.
Lol. I want to finish my novel, but I don’t think it’s happening anytime soon.
I’m glad you had a good Thanksgiving! I tried to kind of start a tradition of doing the saying-what-we’re-thankful-for thing, but I clammed up when it was my turn. I just said, “y’know, stuff.” DX I’m not good with giving my opinion or thoughts. I have this stupid fear that my mom will laugh at me, lol.
I’d say I’m thankful for, like you said, family and friends. And also the things we take for granted, but enjoy daily, like electricity, and having plenty of food and stuff.
Thanksgiving dinner was a bit awkward for me since I knew no one there, but I did bond a little with some of the immature college kids.
I’m just thankful for the life I’ve been giving and the people and things that have come with it.
I actually heard what the crowd was like at Wal-Mart at 10 PM last night on the radio. It’s crazy how some people would just finish Thanksgiving early or skip it to just go shopping.
Hello Nathan,
Wow we only had 7 people over, non-related apart from one cousin, and I thought that was alot. Imagine 25! How do they all fit inside your house?! HAHA. But yay, someone other than my family who has friends over for Thanksgiving! I guess it depends since Thanksgiving isn’t my family’s culture but we celebrate to a certain extent.
Aww your list of what you’re thankful is so meaningful. You can be thankful about something that might not be entirely perfect. That’s very inspirational. I mean, I try to be thankful for what I have but I find it very hard and I feel bad when I read stuff like what you wrote. My relationship with my family is close to being worst of the worst, and right now I’m really not thankful for my country, which is kind of tied in with my family as I think right now 3 members are loyal to America, 1 is loyal to Korea, and I’m floating in between.
I don’t think Black Friday corrupts Thanksgiving, but I do think it should be pushed back a bit so people can spend more time with their families. Then go crazy to buy cheap stuff? Haha.
I am thankful for my friends, because unlike my family they’re always there for me no matter how bad I’ve been. <3
I do know where Missouri is actually, even if I fail at some of the midwestern-western state locations. I wouldn't expect you to have a ton of foreign friends actually, wow! You know, I live in New York not city, and we get the exact same! Rainy springs, hot summers, freezing/snowy winters. Though these days are still for some reason sandals weather. I guess it depends on our definition of sandals-appropriate weather.
Lol I got scolded by my mom once for wearing cute things … because it's immature. What????
Happy belated Thanksgiving and Black Friday :P! Congratulations on reaching 47,000+ words on NaNoWriMo! :D! You’re close to the 50,000 words mark!
It’s nice having a lot of people over for Thanksgiving- especially :D! I’m part Vietnamese and Chinese and my family always celebrated Thanksgiving one way or another :O! With a turkey or with other things :P.
Being thankful is the best feeling- because you’re just lucky to have people and things to be thankful for :D! I think it’s just something we gotta take pride for :P.
I hate how a lot of stores opened at midnight! This means more people won’t sleep and people will be cranky! D:! This explains for pepper sprays sent by some lady and police brutality to some old man who hid a game for his grandson or osmething!
I am thankful for having better grades this semester- it’s something I haven’t had since 1st semester freshmen year :/. I’m thankful for my family, who I haven’t had much of a fight with and my friends for sticking to me. I am also thankful for the blogging world for keeping me sane!
Congratulations on receiving an acceptance letter to the college you want to apply to! :D! I know my acceptance letter(s) won’t come til May D:!
It takes steps to the top in anything! Heck, for playoffs, my school’s football team hasn’t been to round 2 since 1991! That’s a first!
Take care(:
I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving! We always have huge family gathers when holidays come around! Sometimes it can be overwhelming with all the cooking and trying to make everyone happy D:< … but no complaints!
I know this might be cheesy but I watched a Lifetime movie and this girl was paraplegic, so I'm thankful for all my working limbs, my family and friends, having light, water, heat and a shelter. I can admit that God has truly blessed me
Happy Thanksgiving to you too! Even though I don’t celebrate it lol. But yeah~
Wow! That is so many people. At Christmas we are usually somewhere else. Well last year I was in South Africa where most of my dad’s side of the family live. There was..around 15 of us. c: Fun fun fun fun. Well on Chinese New Year a few relatives on my mum’s side of the family come over or we go somewhere with them. And I get MONEHHH. Okay yeah.
One of my friends who is like SUPER Chinese doesn’t celebrate Christmas! Except when at school we do Kris Kringle(Secret Santa XD). Scary lol.
Arrgggh my friends and family are way too awesome to even took about. I luv ’em. Looool at school there’s like this Asian group of friends and an Aussie group of friends. The Asians are supersmart and good at sport and the Asians are good at sport and popular. But then I’m like half Asian half not so I am like split in half. B) Lololol. But then most of the time the groups mix. It’s just that the Asian peeps are closer together and the Aussie peeps are closer together.
Wowwwww. Crazy people, crazy shop owners. Sorry lol but I think it’s..kind of weird? I’m sorry <3 But it's just what I think.
I am thankful for..friends, family, being able to have a pet and a house. And being able to go to school <3 And always having awesome teachers..Okay the list goes on but I am not listing anymore.
